Leaders of NewsGuild locals and units across the U.S. say JCPA needs improvement

Leaders of several NewsGuild locals and bargaining units sent a letter to U.S. Senate Judiciary committee leaders Wednesday expressing concerns about the proposed Journalism Competition and Preservation Act.

The legislation would give news publishers an antitrust exemption to collectively bargain more favorable digital ad rates with Google and Facebook.

The Guild leaders said the legislation would benefit some of the nation’s largest and most predatory local news companies, such as Gannett, and urged policymakers to take stronger steps to ensure transparency and that new revenues would be spent on journalism.
