Job posting: Staff Representative / Contract Campaign Lead (updated)
The Media Guild of the West (TNG-CWA Local 39213) seeks candidates for a full-time Staff Representative/Contract Campaign Lead position based in Los Angeles. This position’s goal is to help newly organized media unions bargain and win their first collective-bargaining agreements.
We are a local of The NewsGuild, which represents more than 25,000 workers in North America. MGW is a rapidly growing, organizing-minded union representing nearly 1,000 workers in the news and media industry in California, Arizona and Texas, including journalists at the Los Angeles Times, the Arizona Republic, the Dallas Morning News and other publications. We believe in putting workers in every fight. They set the agenda, and they take charge at the bargaining table and in the shop.
The NewsGuild is a sector of Communications Workers of America, which represents members around the U.S. and Canada in media, broadcasting, nonprofits, telecommunications, airlines and more.
This is a hands-on position that will work daily with bargaining committees, shop stewards, contract action teams and the membership. Nights and weekends are regularly required. Work is currently remote, but travel to assist units across the U.S. is expected once the pandemic ends.
Job duties and requirements include:
Assisting members with bargaining and winning first contracts
Must have familiarity with labor law and experience with private-sector contract campaigns
Working with members to develop and execute campaigns for first contracts
Assisting members in developing contract proposals and negotiations
Where appropriate, recommending and assisting with filing ULPs
Assisting members to map and chart workplaces, build leadership networks and conduct structure tests, both for internal and external organizing campaigns
Regularly coordinating with local and national NewsGuild staff to set goals, track progress and brainstorm through challenges
Salary: $85,000 with benefits including cell phone reimbursement, 401(k) match and medical, vision and dental benefits. This is a one-year contract position to start, with possible extensions based on available funding.
